Digestion, the second of the Six Stages of Nutrition, is the process by which foods are broken down into nutritional “building blocks” small enough to be absorbed through the intestinal wall and into the bloodstream for distribution and utilisation for energy and cellular support. Complex foods – lipids, proteins, and carbohydrates – are broken down into simpler substances – fatty acids, amino acids and sugars respectively. Two vitally important components of proper digestive function are enzymes (required to break down foods), and an acidic stomach environment to allow the specific enzymes to work effectively. For many people, they may be lacking in either one or both of these capacities.
